A recent Drag Show involving high school students in Ankeny High school has raised parent concerns over its appropriateness.
The Ankeny Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) hosted a drag event as an end-of-the-year event, where performers from the Des Moines metro used the event to talk about how Drag has helped them in their personal lives and struggles in coming out where performances were given.
Professional Drag performer, Skyer Barning, also known as Komplete Moon, and other Drag performers made appearances and participated in the event, according to the latest reports.

In a statement to KCCI news, the Ankeny School district said:
“The district has been made aware of an unauthorized performance that took place yesterday after school at Ankeny High School. As a part of the Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) Club’s end-of-the-year meeting, performers from the Central Iowa Youth Pride Pageant were invited to share a drag performance. While the GSA is an approved school club, this performance was not approved by the building administration and did not follow the correct protocols prior to the meeting. This performance was after school and localized to the students participating in the club. It was not approved by the building administration, and it is currently under investigation.”
Barning told the register how the reaction to the Drag performance held by the Ankeny school was both “vile” and “hurtful”.
One of the performers from the event talked about how healthy and important it was for students, reported KCCI.
Rep. Cindy Axne, who represents Ankeny in Congress, has yet to comment on the unauthorized drag show.
The Iowa Field Report reached out to the Axne campaign multiple times for comment and will update this story if we hear back.
