Republicans express outrage after the FBI declined to press charges against agents who failed to respond to sexual abuse claims by prominent U.S gymnasts committed by disgraced Physician Larry Nassar.

Senator Todd Young (R-Ind) and ranking members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Senator Chuck Grassley, have recently pushed the Department Of Justice to answer why in public statements.

Federal Officials Adhere to Prior Decision Related to Nassar Investigation

“Justice Department announced today that after careful re-review of evidence gathered in the investigation of two former FBI special agents in connection with their involvement in the FBI’s investigation of Lawrence G. Nassar, it is adhering to its prior decision not to bring federal criminal charges,” stated the online post by the DOJ.

Before the published statement announcing no charges, the Department’s Office of Inspector General (OIG) released its findings of the negligence of the agents handling the Nassar case, concluding that:

“The OIG found that, despite the extraordinarily serious nature of the allegations and the possibility that Nassar’s conduct could be continuing, senior officials in the FBI Indianapolis Field Office failed to respond to the Nassar allegations with the utmost seriousness and urgency that they deserved and required, made numerous and fundamental errors when they did respond to them, and violated multiple FBI policies,” said the OIG Executive Summary Report.

After the re-review of the case investigation announcing the no charges, Grassley’s Office issues the following statement:

“Accountability in government is fundamental to public trust. This is just the latest in a string of failures by our nation’s premier law enforcement agencies to hold themselves accountable. Young women paid the price for these failures. A sexual predator continued to abuse them while the FBI essentially helped cover it up. I’d like to take heart in Director Wray’s promises that it can’t and won’t happen again. But without anyone being held responsible now, it’s just hard to see that things will change.”
